Cirros for macOS

Cirros is available as a native client for macOS, alongside the Windows client. It is built specifically for Apple's operating system rather than ported from Windows, and gives macOS users the same serverless managed print experience: a Cirros print queue, secure release at any supported device, and the cloud-backed print flow, with no Windows-side dependency.

Sites that are Windows-only do not need to do anything. This guide is for estates that include macOS users. For the Windows client, see Deploying the Windows client.

What you get on macOS

  • Native macOS application. It sits in the menu bar, follows Apple's design conventions, and integrates with macOS print services.
  • A Cirros print queue. Send to Cirros (or Send to GovPrint, depending on your deployment) is available as a print destination from any macOS application.
  • Serverless managed print. Submit, hold in the cloud, release at any supported device, exactly as the Windows client does.
  • Same queue and release flow. Jobs sent from a Mac appear in the same secure-release queue as Windows jobs and can be released at any supported Cirros managed printer.
  • Unified reporting. Print activity from Macs flows into the same Cirros reporting and accounting as Windows, so the operator sees the whole estate.

What you need

  • A Mac running a current version of macOS.
  • A Cirros account, this is your normal work sign-in.
  • The Cirros macOS client, supplied by your IT team or your Cirros contact.

Install the client

  1. Install the Cirros macOS client supplied for your organisation. In a managed estate this is usually pushed to your Mac automatically.
  2. When it is running, the Cirros icon appears in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In a managed estate, your IT team deploys the client and you may not need to do anything. If you are installing it yourself, use the package your IT team or Cirros contact provides, not a copy from elsewhere.

  1. Open the Cirros client from the menu bar.
  2. Sign in with your normal work account when prompted. This enrols your Mac into your organisation's Cirros tenant through the standard enrolment flow.
  3. Once signed in, the Cirros print queue is ready to use.
  1. Open the document in any macOS application and choose File then Print.
  2. Select Send to Cirros (or Send to GovPrint) as the printer.
  3. Choose your print settings, then print. Depending on your deployment, you either set the options in the application's print dialog, or the Cirros print ticket opens so you can choose colour, duplex, copies and finishing, check the preview and cost, and submit. See The Cirros print ticket.

Collect your print

Your job waits securely in your Cirros print queue until you release it. Go to any Cirros managed printer, sign in the way you normally do (for example your PIN / Passcode or card), and release the job from your print list. Nothing prints until you are there to collect it.

For administrators

  • One deployment model. macOS workstations are onboarded into the same tenant as Windows workstations, through the standard Cirros enrolment flow.
  • Consistent experience. macOS users get the same Cirros experience as their Windows colleagues, so support, training and documentation stay unified across the estate.
  • Whole-estate reporting. Print activity from Macs flows into the same Cirros reporting and accounting as Windows.
  • Adding macOS. To add macOS to an existing deployment, contact your Cirros account contact.

Security and compliance

The macOS client operates under the same Cirros security policy as the rest of the platform, within the existing ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified scope. Job submission uses the same TLS 1.2 or higher transport and the same authentication model as the Windows client, and print activity is logged in the same way and to the same retention period.
