HP MFD in an error state

An HP MFD can be in an error state without it being obvious. The device may look normal, but it will not print or release jobs until the fault is cleared. This page helps you spot the fault and fix the common causes.

How errors show on HP devices

HP devices do not always make an error state clear. Look for a small red warning circle on the control panel.

On an HP Enterprise device, the red warning circle means a general error that needs someone to step in. The cause might be a paper jam, a supply error or a hardware failure. The control panel usually shows a message or an error code that tells you which.

The Cirros application may be fine. If the Cirros application is running but the device will not print, the fault is often with the MFD itself rather than with the Cirros software. Work through the steps below before you report a problem with Cirros.

Clear the error

The exact meaning depends on the HP model and on any other lights or messages shown. These steps clear most errors.

  1. Read the control panel. Look for a specific message or code, such as Paper Jam in Tray 2, Incompatible Toner or Formatter Failure. The fix can be as simple as a paper guide set to the wrong position in a tray.
  2. Check for paper jams. Open every access area, including the trays, the covers and the duplexer. Carefully remove any jammed paper or other obstruction.
  3. Reseat supplies and close everything fully. Push every tray fully home. Close every cover. Make sure the toner and drum cartridges are seated correctly. Any of these can put the device into an error state.
  4. Check the device again. Once everything is closed, check whether the red warning circle has gone and whether the device is ready to print.

If the error does not clear

If the error stays after the steps above, or the control panel shows a hardware message such as Formatter Failure, the device needs an engineer. Contact the Cirros Service Desk at servicedesk@cirros.net and we can arrange a visit.

Please include:

  • the device serial number;
  • the message or error code on the control panel, if there is one;
  • what you have already tried.

If the control panel shows no message at all, tell us. A device in an error state with no message will most likely need an engineer visit.
