Cirros Windows client release notes
These are the release notes for the Cirros Windows client, the software that runs on your workstation and adds the Send to Cirros printer. The newest release is first. For most people there is nothing to do: updates arrive through your administrators, and how you print, scan and release jobs stays the same.
Looking for a fix you were waiting for? The Cirros Windows client 1.3 known issues page lists each problem fixed across the 1.3 line, with what to do if you are still on an older build.
Version 1.4
Version: 1.4.0 · Available from: 01/10/2026 in the Cirros Dashboard
Version 1.4 makes the redesigned print experience the standard and brings the whole 1.3 series together in one build. It is the current public release.
GovPrint organisations. Workstations do not move to 1.4 on their own. See Moving GovPrint workstations to Cirros client 1.4 before you update.
| Area | What changed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| New print ticket | The redesigned print ticket is now standard. It has cleaner rows and simple on/off toggles, and shows your page count and cost before you send. You can save your settings as print profiles and reapply them in one click. The previous tile layout stays available through configuration during the transition. | New |
| Send to Print Room | Send large or specialist jobs to a central print room, with options for handling, covers, finishing, delivery and required-by dates. | New |
| Accessibility view | A built-in view of the print ticket for people who use screen readers and other assistive technology. It meets WCAG standards. | New |
| Single generic build | One installer serves every organisation. Each installation is linked to your organisation at install time using your Company Code. | New |
| Windows on ARM | The same build covers standard x64 and ARM-based Windows devices, so you do not need a separate package. | New |
| Phased rollouts | Administrators manage updates through three release channels (Stable, Early Adopter and Beta), with a staged auto-update percentage and schedule. See update rings. | New |
| Release Notes Hub | Release notes for cloud and workstation client updates are in one place in the Dashboard. | New |
| Dragon NaturallySpeaking | Dragon dictation and Cirros now run side by side without conflict. | Fixed |
| Print reliability | Brings together the reliability fixes from the 1.3 series: the print path repairs itself, there are no false "waiting for printer" alarms after a restart, and a new user's first print is no longer lost. | Fixed |
| Faster, more modern printing | A modern Microsoft IPP print pipeline, 64-bit components and the latest browser engine, with steadier handling of large jobs. | Improved |
| Automatic updates | Computers that use Windows Fast Startup now apply client updates reliably. An update never interrupts a print. | Improved |
| Security | Security improvements across the client, including support for Windows Protected Print. | Security |
What you need to do. Most users: nothing. How you sign in and tap your card is the same, and your existing print destinations keep working. Administrators: set up role permissions to reveal the new Dashboard views.
Print to Office, Send to Print Room and Direct Print are configurable features and may carry additional charges.
Version 1.3.19
Two improvements customers asked for, plus reliability fixes. This release also delivered the fixes from release candidate 1.3.18.
| Area | What changed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | Screen readers (NVDA and JAWS) and Dragon NaturallySpeaking can now identify the fields and buttons in the print window. Keyboard focus is shown clearly, and controls that used to announce the same label now have their own. | Improved |
| Automatic updates | Computers that use Windows Fast Startup now install client updates reliably, so they no longer stay on an older build. Updates apply quietly in the background without interrupting printing. | Improved |
| First-print reliability | In rare cases a brand-new user's very first print could be lost while their sign-in was still finishing. Cirros now waits for sign-in to finish. If anything is still pending, it holds the job so you can reprint it instead of losing it. | Fixed |
| False printer errors | After a restart, the background print self-test no longer wrongly reports a printer problem. You no longer see a "waiting for printer connection" message, a stray print window or errors in the print queue on a healthy computer. | Fixed |
What you need to do. Nothing. The improvements arrive with the new client version.
Version 1.3.18
Release date: 21/07/2026 (release candidate)
A maintenance and reliability update. It was not released on its own: its fixes reached customers in 1.3.19.
| Area | What changed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Printing reliability | The background print self-test introduced in 1.3.17 could occasionally leave a stray test job behind, which could make a print window fail to load and keep coming back. The self-test now always produces a valid test job and clears any stray ones. | Fixed |
| Consistent performance | The client now tidies its local data regularly, so it stays responsive on computers that are left on for long periods. | Improved |
| Support diagnostics | Clearer logs help Cirros support resolve issues faster. | Improved |
What you need to do. Nothing. How you print, scan and release jobs is the same as in 1.3.17.
Version 1.3.17
Release date: 01/07/2026
This release focuses on keeping printing reliable and getting help faster. It adds a self-service troubleshooter, an automatic print self-test, a one-click way to send diagnostic logs, and a Logout option for shared workstations.
| Area | What changed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Troubleshoot printing | The Cirros tray menu now offers Troubleshoot printing, which replaces Reset Cirros Print Queue. It runs plain-language checks on the Cirros print service, the printer setup, a test page and the connection to Cirros. It then offers clearly labelled fixes, such as recreating the print queue or repairing the driver, with a last-resort reset. The same window can open by itself if a print job hits an error. On shared (multi-user or remote desktop) computers it is read-only, so one person's fix cannot disrupt others. | New |
| Automatic print self-test | Cirros can run a hidden test print in the background to check that the whole print path works, including shortly after a restart. If it finds a fault, it repairs it automatically, by restarting the Windows print spooler or reinstalling the Microsoft print driver. The test print is invisible to users and is never uploaded or charged for. It is off until an administrator turns it on. | New |
| Send Logs to Cirros | A new Send Logs to Cirros option in the tray menu packages your diagnostic logs and sends them securely to Cirros support against your case, in one step. Use it only when support asks you to. | New |
| Logout | A new Logout option in the tray menu lets you sign out of a shared workstation. It appears only when someone is signed in. | New |
| Remote support groundwork | Early groundwork for remote-assisted support in a future release. It is switched off and not yet active. | Preview |
| Print notifications | Print notifications now recover on their own if the Windows print spooler restarts. Job status also shows Blocked and User Intervention states, so held-up jobs are easier to see. | Fixed |
| Reliability | The Cirros background service restarts itself if it stops responding. The client makes sure the Windows print spooler is running and can reinstall a damaged Microsoft print driver. Menus respond faster, the sign-in and print windows no longer flicker when focus changes, the tray menu keeps itself up to date, and an accidental exit is prevented. All Cirros workstation components now share one version number. | Improved |
| Security | Security updates to the client and its third-party components, applied automatically. | Security |
What you need to do. Nothing for most people. Administrators can choose to turn on the automatic print self-test.
