For Canon engineers: send Cirros your device serial numbers ahead of deployment and we'll pre-register them, so devices arrive at site ready to use.

Overview

This guide covers installing the Cirros application on a Canon MFD. There are two installation methods, the License Access Number (LAN code) method and the SMS (Service Management Service) method. Both need the Cirros CA certificate installed first, and registration is the same for both. For rollouts, devices can be pre-registered with Cirros so they register themselves on arrival.

Files and codes. The CA certificate, the application and licence files, the LAN code and the company code are all supplied by Cirros. Always use the files and codes issued for your tenant.

Before you begin

  • Files from Cirros. The CA certificate, plus either the LAN code (Method 1) or the application (.jar) and licence (.lic) files (Method 2).
  • Administrator access to the device, at the panel and through its web page (Remote UI).
  • Network access. The device must be able to reach the Cirros cloud. If the site firewall needs configuring, Cirros can supply the current list of endpoints on request from servicedesk@cirros.net.

Provisioning: pre-register devices before they ship New

Cirros supports device pre-registration, so devices can be bound to the right customer before they leave the PDI Centre. When a pre-registered device is powered on and connects at the customer site, it registers and provisions itself automatically, with no registration step at the device. This is the recommended route for multi-device rollouts. See Device pre-registration for the full process, including a section for suppliers and PDI centres.

How it works

  1. Send the batch. Before the devices ship or are installed, send Cirros the device details for the batch.
  2. Cirros approves it. Cirros stages the batch, then checks and approves it before it goes live.
  3. Devices register themselves. When each device is powered on and connects at the customer site, it auto-registers against the right customer and is ready to use.

What Cirros needs for each batch

ItemDetail
Batch referenceYour own reference for the shipment
Company CodeThe customer's Cirros Company Code
Device typeThe device type for the batch
Serial numbersOne row per device

Template. Complete the Cirros device batch template (one row per device) and return it to servicedesk@cirros.net. You can send several batches, and re-send an updated file if serials change.

Cirros can confirm the status of any batch (staged, ready, provisioned) on request.

Still required. Pre-registration replaces the registration step in section 3 only. The CA certificate (section 1) and the Cirros application (section 2) must still be installed on every device, normally during the PDI build.

1. Install the CA certificate

Install the Cirros CA certificate first. This is the same for both methods.

  1. Log in to the device's web page (Remote UI) as administrator.
  2. Open the certificate settings. Go to Settings / Registration → Management Settings → Device Management → CA Certificate Settings.
  3. Register the certificate. Select Register Certificate, then Install Key and Certificate.
  4. Choose the Cirros certificate. Browse to the certificate file supplied by Cirros and select Open to install it.

2. Install the Cirros application

Use either of the methods below.

Method 1: LAN code (License Access Number)

  1. Log in as administrator, either at the device panel under Settings / Registration or through the device's web page.
  2. Open the install option. Go to Management Settings → License / Other → Register / Update Software → Software Management Settings → Install Applications / Options → License Access Number.
  3. Enter the LAN code supplied by Cirros, then select Confirm and Enable.
  4. Install. Select install and accept any prompts.
  5. Apply the changes.

Method 2: SMS page (Service Management Service)

  1. Open the SMS page from the device's Remote UI and log in.
  2. Go to Install MEAP Application.
  3. Select the files. Browse to the Cirros application file (.jar) and licence file (.lic) supplied by Cirros.
  4. Install and start. Install the application, then Start it from the MEAP Application Management page.

Menu names vary. Wording and menu paths can differ slightly by Canon model and firmware. If an option isn't exactly where described, look for the equivalent under Settings / Registration → Management Settings.

3. Register the Cirros application

Pre-registered devices. If the device was pre-registered (see Provisioning), it registers itself when it first connects at site and you can skip this section. If a device is not pre-registered, or is not recognised, it shows the registration code screen instead, and you register it manually as below.

Once the Cirros application is loaded, the device downloads its settings from the Cirros cloud. If that fails, or the settings need refreshing, you can force an update from the admin screen. Registration is the same for both methods.

Get the registration code from the device

  1. Open the admin screen. While the welcome screen is showing, tap the top right corner of the screen repeatedly.
  2. Note the code. Write down the 8-digit code shown next to the QR code.

Register on the Cirros website

  1. Open the registration page. On a PC or laptop, go to the address shown on the control panel, core.cirros.net/registration, or scan the QR code.
  2. Enter the company code and select Submit.
  3. Confirm the details. When prompted, confirm the company code, then enter the password.
  4. Set the location. Under Location of the device, enter the department or building it is going in, then select Submit.
  5. Check the panel. The device screen should change to the full Cirros application.
  6. Test. Log in at the device and run a test with your credentials.

Done. The device is now installed and registered.

Troubleshooting

The device shows “failed to connect to cloud”

Check the device holds an address on the site network rather than a build or staging range, then confirm the site allows the Cirros cloud endpoints. A device still on its build address has never registered at site.

The device didn't pick up its settings

Use the admin screen (section 3) to force a settings update, then repeat the website registration if the panel still doesn't show the full Cirros application.
